The City of Kingston appointed iDwala to design the redevelopment of the cricket net facility at GR Bricker Reserve in Moorabbin – addressing the growing demand for upgraded community sport infrastructure. The existing three-lane nets had deteriorated beyond repair, prompting a full replacement. iDwala’s innovative design expanded the facility to a modern four-lane synthetic grass cricket training area, significantly enhancing functionality and capacity.

Due to spatial constraints at the reserve, the new nets were required to retain their East–West orientation, despite Cricket Victoria’s preference for a North–South layout. This limitation was driven by the presence of a large eucalyptus tree, a nearby playground, and newly proposed football oval light towers.

Furthermore, due to the orientation of the cricket practice nets, the bowler’s run-up extended into the oval. iDwala addressed this by designing a compliant AFL-certified cushioned synthetic grass surface, suitable for use by both footballers and cricketers.

To help mitigate sun glare associated with East–West facing nets, particularly for bowlers – iDwala incorporated a structure designed to support future installation of overhead shade cloth. The upgrade also included a new power bollard to service all four lanes with the capacity for a bowling machine, and an AFL compliant synthetic grass surface for the bowler’s run-up.

The result is a durable, modern training facility that meets the needs of both the Omega Cricket Club and the wider community, ensuring GR Bricker Reserve continues to be a hub for inclusive, high-quality sports and recreation.
