At Rupanyup Recreation Reserve within Yarriambiack Shire Council, aging infrastructure was limiting the community’s ability to enjoy quality sports facilities. Three non-compliant tennis courts and a single netball court were in desperate need of a full-scale upgrade, but the project presented several design challenges that required innovative solutions.
iDwala was engaged to design two new multipurpose courts that met the compliance requirements of Netball Victoria and Tennis Australia. However, space constraints meant only two compliant courts for each sport could be accommodated. A large existing shed had to be retained, restricting available space and requiring careful court positioning to stay within the title boundary, including sufficient space for players. Uneven ground levels added another layer of complexity, particularly near the southern side of the facility, where maintaining accessibility and avoiding disruptions to existing courts was a priority.
By applying creative spatial planning and precise level adjustments, iDwala successfully navigated these constraints to deliver a high-quality design that maximised functionality without compromising on space or accessibility.
The approach ensured minimal interference with surrounding courts, allowing the community to continue using the neighbouring facilities throughout the project—an outcome of great value to both the club and local players. The result is a modern, versatile sports precinct that provides Rupanyup and the wider Yarriambiack Shire with an upgraded space to support netball and tennis for years to come.
