REDEVELOPMENT OF THREE NEW PARTIALLY ENCLOSED CRICKET NETS

Client: City of Greater Geelong
Timing: October 2023
Surface Type: Synthetic Grass

Wallington Reserve, a much-loved recreational space in Greater Geelong, is home to the Wallington Cricket Club and supports several nearby clubs and local community groups. With ageing facilities in need of renewal, iDwala was engaged to design a new three-lane cricket net facility, including a DDA-compliant footpath to enhance accessibility.

At the request of Wallington Cricket Club, iDwala designed extended run-up areas to better support bowlers. The three new, partially enclosed synthetic turf lanes span 40-metres in length – exceeding the standard 36-metre run-ups and improving training outcomes for the users.

The design also incorporated the existing Baseball warmup area into the existing fencing structure and added protection to the facility.

The site previously had no formal drainage infrastructure, so an overland swale system was introduced to protect the synthetic surface and pitches from potential water damage. To ensure inclusive access, a DDA-approved footpath was incorporated alongside the nets, levelled precisely to match the existing shed and entry door.

This upgraded facility delivers not only on the club’s vision but also creates a more inviting and functional space for the broader community to enjoy. iDwala’s design has strengthened training capabilities, encouraged new club membership, and provided a high-quality environment where local players can prepare for the season ahead and enjoy the game with friends and teammates.
